What is Adrenal Fatigue?
The term “adrenal fatigue” was coined in 1998 by James Wilson, PhD, a naturopath and expert in alternative medicine. He describes it as a “group of related signs and symptoms (a syndrome) that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level.” He says it’s usually associated with intense stress and often follows chronic infections like bronchitis, flu, or pneumonia.
What are the Symptoms?
What happens when the adrenal glands stop producing hormones efficiently? Every bodily function is affected, and as adrenal hormone levels ebb and flow abnormally, even the normal “get-up-and-go” you get from them disappears. Adrenal fatigue symptoms include:
Chronic fatigue (always feeling tired)
Weakened stress response
Decreased sex drive/libido
Moodiness and irritability
Muscle or bone loss
Sweet and salty food cravings
3 Ways to Boost Your Adrenal System
1. Dietary changes:
Cut out Sugar, Caffeine and Junk Food
Cut back on starchy foods and gluten
Cut out processed foods
Eat organic meat
Eat more coconut oil, avocados, olives, cruciferous vegetables, nuts and fermented foods
2. Take supplements and herbs:
Herbs that help support healthy adrenal function: Adaptogenic herbs ashwagandha, rhodiola rosea, schisandra and holy basil
Fish Oil to help with EPA/DHA which can counteract a number of the adrenal fatigue symptoms
Vitamins – B complex, Vitamin D and Vitamin C (my favorite whole food vitamin)

Get 8-10 hours of sleep
Rest when possible in the afternoon
Avoid staying up late
Participate in light exercise at least 3 times a week
